This is a variation of a recipe I found on a site called Baking with Granny. I cuit down the amount of sugar in it given how sweet dates naturally are.
Pre heat the oven to 170 C
Add the dates, bicarb of soda, butter and sugar to a bowl. Pour over the boiling water. Mix to combine the butter with the other ingredients. Set aside to cool.
Line a loaf tin with baking paper.
Add the beaten egg and walnuts to the mixture
Sieve the flour into a separate bowl with the baking powder.
Fold the flour into the date and walnut mixture.
Transfer the mix to the loaf tin and place in the oven to bake for 1 and 15 minutes. Check your cake after 50 minutes and cover with a sheet of baking paper if it starts to burn on top.
